Experience one of the ocean’s most intense natural spectacles

Sardine Run Expedition

Sardine Run Expedition – Magdalena Bay (full-day & multi-day options)

Experience one of the ocean’s most intense natural spectacles as vast sardine baitballs drive striped marlin, dolphins, sea lions, tuna and other predators into a feeding frenzy along Magdalena Bay. This full-day king aircraft or helicopter-to-the-bay expedition places you at the heart of the action for high-adrenaline viewing and guided snorkeling opportunities; multi-day itineraries maximize your chances of extraordinary encounters.

Why Choose a Multi-day Expedition?

To ensure a better experience, we highly recommend a multi day expedition for the sardine run because the sardines are highly mobile and often enough they are very far away from shore which means that we need to spend a good amount of time during the day traveling to that area. In addition, if we encounter other marine life on the way we may be able to stop to swim with them.

When to go & what the season looks like

The Sardine Run in Magdalena Bay is typically active in the fall, with the richest activity from about mid-October through December. Weather windows and exact timing vary year to year, so we plan departures to match the best local forecasts and on-the-water reports.

How we get there – helicopter access & fast transfer

Your day begins with a private king aircraft or Bell helicopter transfer from Los Cabos for a scenic ~2-hour air crossing to Magdalena Bay (flight schedules depend on aircraft and routing). Flying dramatically reduces travel time versus a long overland drive and puts you on site quickly so more time is spent chasing baitballs and wildlife.

What you’ll see – baitballs, predators and snorkeling

Expect heart-pounding scenes of compacted sardine schools – pulsating, twisting baitballs that concentrate predators. Guides position pangas and larger boats for optimal viewing and controlled snorkeling rotations; when conditions permit, guests may snorkel near feeding activity to witness striped marlin, sea lions and tuna hunting in tight formation. These are regulated, guided experiences focused on safety and minimizing disturbance.

Full-day vs multi-day expeditions

A full-day helicopter trip delivers a high-impact single-day experience and is ideal for guests short on time. For photographers and serious wildlife enthusiasts, our multi-day expedition (commonly 3 days) explores more water, follows shifting feeding zones, and increases the probability of multiple, up-close predator and baitball encounters – and allows time for relaxed snorkeling and on-shore downtime between action-packed mornings.

Safety, regulations & best practices

Sardine-run snorkeling and boat work require strict protocols: small in-water rotations, experienced local captains, and no-touch / no-chase rules for wildlife. We work with licensed local teams who know where and when to approach baitball activity safely, and we brief all guests on wildlife etiquette and emergency procedures before boarding.

Why choose our Sardine Run Expedition

We combine fast king aircraft or helicopter access, expert local captains and guided snorkeling rotations to deliver a premium, conservation-minded experience. Our multi-day departures are tailored for photographers and naturalists who demand more time on the water, while the full-day helicopter option gives a spectacular single-day encounter without the long overland transfer.

What to bring

Light, quick-dry clothing; reef-safe sunscreen; polarized sunglasses; hat; camera in a waterproof housing or dry pouch; motion-sickness remedies if needed; and any personal medications. Wear non-slip deck shoes and bring a small dry bag for essentials.

Who should book this expedition

Adventurous travelers, wildlife photographers, snorkelers and small private groups who want an unforgettable marine spectacle-either as a fast single-day trip or a more immersive multi-day ocean expedition.

About Magdalena Bay

Magdalena Bay is one of those rare ecosystems whose wildlife “cycles,” offering something different every season. During winter (January to March), Magdalena Bay transforms into one of the world’s most important gray whale nurseries, where mothers gently guide their newborn calves through the calm, protected waters. This season is defined by intimate, curious encounters as the whales often approach boats on their own terms. During fall (October and November), the bay shifts into a completely different spectacle: the legendary bait-ball season. Massive schools of sardines gather just offshore, drawing in striped marlin, sea lions, sharks, and countless seabirds in one of the most electrifying predator–prey displays in the Pacific. Together, these seasons showcase the extraordinary pulse of life that defines Magdalena Bay.

Magdalena Bay is home to over 24,000 acres of mangrove forest – one of the largest and most pristine ecosystems on the Pacific coast of the Americas – and its beauty can be explored in any season. All three of Mexico’s mangrove species – red, black, and white – flourish here, creating a lush, living maze that hugs the edge of the bay. These mangroves, framed by the bay’s sweeping golden dunes, act as nurseries for an extraordinary array of wildlife, sheltering baby sharks, rays, juvenile fish, sea turtles, and more than 200 species of birds throughout the year. Thanks to upwelling and mangrove nutrients, Magdalena Bay supports some of the highest marine productivity in the Eastern Pacific – pound for pound, richer than many coral reef systems.
